Supernatural Think Tank - Anna's Thinky Thoughts on 12x05 The One You've Been Waiting For

Hello everyone.  I hope you all enjoyed this week's romp with the boys.  I chose this word with great intention, because that was how I viewed the episode, as a light hearted, humorous, step away from issues, romp.

I wanted to share with you firstly my routine when writing up all my thinky thoughts. The first thing I do before writing up an article is read posts from others.   Sometimes I watch an episode and my head is just flooded with all these notions and I cannot write them down fast enough.  Then there are episodes where I have no idea what I should write about.  It's not that I didn't like an episode, it's just that I'm not always sure which direction I should come from.  When I read other people's opinions and get an idea of whether or not they liked an episode and their reasons why, it often helps me to establish my own, to consider a different approach or to sometimes agree or disagree with their way of thinking.  I then try to formulate a fair and unbiased article that explains in great detail what I'm thinking and my reasons for it.

I also wanted to let you know that when I watch an episode, I don't compare writers or show runners of the past with the present.  Every writer, every show runner has their own approach to the way the boys' story is told.  I cannot deny that there are some better writers than others, some get the boys more than others do, some have a better grasp as to how to tell a story that keeps you at the edge of your seat, or makes you laugh uncontrollably or ultimately has you reaching for the Kleenex.  There will also inevitably be episodes that might be considered, for lack of a more articulate word, klunkers.  Let's face it,  that's a given for every show.  There is undoubtedly, in a show that has gone on for 200+ episodes going to be some that don't go over well with some of the fandom.  As I was reading posts regarding this episode, there were quite a few that consider this episode one of those klunkers.  I am not one of them, but as I read their reasons for their disappointments, what it was that bothered them so much with this episode, it did enable me to gather my own thoughts as to why this episode didn't bother me at all.  I actually found myself giggling, a lot.

What  I believe to be a great disadvantage is the fact that many people compared this episode to Everybody Hates Hitler. It's understandable why they did of course, it is after all a story about the Thule and Hitler. They showed us in the" Then" scenes from EHH a reminder of who the boys are dealing with once again and how the Thule were/are this  twisted secret society hell bent on world domination and had sponsored the early days of the Nazi Party and Hitler. We are reminded once again that we are definitely dealing with a group of tyrants that were introduced to us back in S8. To be honest, I think that a reminder of who and what the Thule are  is all that these scenes from the past were meant to be seen as.  Here's the thing though, Ben Edlund wrote Everybody Hates Hitler and in this girl's humble opinion, Ben is a very unique writer.  He has an incredible talent for blending comedy with horror.  He has a sharp wit and there's an intelligence and wackiness in his scripts that scream out "this is an Edlund episode".   So comparing this episode with Everybody Hates Hitler is like comparing artichokes and chocolate.  The comparison is unfair because for the most part, chocolate wins out over artichokes.  In this scenario, EHH is most definitely the chocolate. It is my personal belief that if one watched the episode with the state of mind that it's just a lighthearted episode meant to poke fun at the tyrants of this world, it could, not saying it would, but it could change the more negative outlook one might have to a more positive one. Maybe one could possibly see the episode as it was meant to be instead of seeing it as  what it wasn't.  Again, just my humble opinion and nothing more.

All that being said, I liked this writer's first outing.  She certainly did her homework too.  I love that they brought up not only the Thule but hearkened back to Out with the Old and cursed objects that could be killing people.  I didn't for one minute feel like she was continuing where Ben E. left off.  It felt, for me,  like it's own episode with a more humorous take on the insanity that is tyranny. I didn't feel that the Thule were made out to be silly or unthreatening as compared to the Thule we first met. The way I look at it, crazy comes in all varieties.  It could be dark, scary insane like the Commandant we met in EHH, or it could be the kind of crazy where the men in the white coats need a call, which is what I thought about this Commandant. I couldn't help but be reminded of a Mel Brooks movie, when Hitler was resurrected in the Commandant.  No I didn't picture Hitler on Ice, but having Hitler be portrayed like a parody made me giggle to no end.  I love that the writer portrayed him as off his nut, because he was right? When all is said and done, no matter how light and humorous one tries to make of it, the truth of the matter is that no matter how you color it, crazy is dangerous and a tyrant is a tyrant, whether their name goes by Hitler, Thule or BMOL.  Bottom line here, what show is basically saying is the scariest monsters really are the human ones.  As goofy and even silly as this episode got, the message was clear and dark, the biggest threat facing our boys isn't a supernatural monster, it's a human one.

I am now going to sing the praises of our boys and the guest cast.  They all did a great job.  They made me laugh and I really wanted to laugh.  I love Sam as you all know.  He's just a wonderful soul.  Show has always depicted Dean as looking out for his younger brother, but sometimes I think it goes unnoticed how much Sam looks out for Dean. I love that in this episode, and the last few eps for that matter, we see a lot of Sam's concern for his brother and him reaching out to him, despite getting shot down.  It tickled me to no end that Sam offered Dean pie to cheer him up.  My heart melted when Sam noticed, by Dean's refusal of food and pie, that Dean still wasn't as alright as he claimed and Sam wanted to be there for Dean to open up to. Nobody will ever know Dean the way Sam does.  I also love how Sam is connecting with the victims as well, being that sympathetic ear and offering them comfort and understanding.  I thought it was hysterical that Sam c-blocked Dean's use of the grenade launcher because he thought stealth would work better....oh Dean, don't worry, Sammy gave you a raincheck...you will get to use that thing one day.

The fight scene between the boys and the Thule henchmen was awesome.  I really like the lighter part of Dean which we did eventually get to see in this ep, from his clumsiness in the antique shop, to his readiness to shoot the Commandant's son in the back of the head, his finally getting to say "follow that car", the excitement of using the grenade launcher to his glee of getting to kill Hitler and boast about it.  Dean has been pretty serious of late, so this was a nice change of pace.  I was really glad to hear him say that he earned that pie.  Baby steps Dean...we're getting there.

I found Ellie to be very likable and I totally felt for the poor girl, but seriously folks, when you have the opportunity to be in the same room as Sam and Dean Winchester, you never ever leave.   Family issues can be tough, just ask the Winchesters.  Though I kind of felt worse for the Commandant's son.  Poor guy, you can't choose your family and all he ever wanted was to make his dad proud.  Sound familiar?  I guess when your dad tries to off you it's time to reconsider your alliances...smart move allying with the Winchesters here.  I wonder if Ketch is still tailing the boys...and if so I wonder if perhaps Buffalo might not be far enough.  I liked the different approach that the writer took towards the Commandant/Hitler.  The Commandant was certifiable to say the least.  There was a blatant cruelty and he had no qualms about killing is own son.  The turn when Hitler was resurrected was humorous but it did have dark undertones.  Hitler was definitely portrayed as being off kilter but at the same time you can sense his underlying cruelty.  We all know that tyranny is no laughing matter when it comes to reality.  This is Supernatural folks and I really got a kick of how show poked fun at this maniacal tyrant by illustrating what a pie eyed crazy son of a bitch he truly was. He most definitely earned dying twice.

That's all I got for this week.  Next week looks amazing.  Mary, Billie, Jody....good stuff indeed.

Til then....enjoy the week folks.

Review - Supernatural 12x05 "The One You've Been Waiting For"

Brothers laughing, brothers smiling, brothers poking fun at each other, brothers talking…. *sigh* Oh Supernatural, you’re spoiling me!

This week was another episode, from a new member of the writing team, Meredith Glynn and was directed by the wonderful Nina Lopez Corrado.

We started The One You’ve Been Waiting For in my absolute favourite way…with a domestic scene in the bunker. Can every episode start like that please? Or end like that? I just love seeing the boys away from hunting. Seeing their life in-between the bits of their life we get to see. Seeing how they interact when they’re not making sure that one of them isn’t going to end up dead at any second! Sam went and did the grocery shopping and god damn it, bought Dean pie! It looked good too, and I’ve been craving pie ever since! Not only that - he offered to cook eggs. Boys doing things for each other! (I once wrote this fan fic where the boys are snowed into the bunker and Sam cooks eggs! Hee!)

Dean’s not hungry - which is never a good sign! Sam reads it as Dean still struggling with what happened with their mum. He’s allowed to still be struggling with his feelings over Mary and her decision to leave her sons. He can be okay with it and not okay with it. He can understand but still feel hurt. That’s all allowed, because emotions are complex and Supernatural has never shied away from complex emotions. Sam reaches out again to see if Dean wants to talk - as I said last week, I think Sam wants to talk too, and getting his brother to discuss their mum issues would also do him the world of good - but Dean’s not interested, he’s hit on a case and he’s sublimating - oh boy…is he ever good at that! But hey, at least he’s aware of it!

It was super cool to revisit the Thule (oooo that rhymes!). I adored Everyone Hates Hitler and The Vessel. Both of those episodes rank among my favourites. And one of my favourite things our show does is revisit old stories, old enemies, and old friends - it’s the luxury of having a show 12 seasons in. A self aware show at that.

Bringing the Thule back means we get to check in with Aaron and his Golem - and though we don’t see the Golem, we do hear that him and Aaron have been actively wiping out the Thule listed in the red ledger as being reanimated dead nazis! Out there doing the Judah Initiative’s work - his grandfather would be so proud. It was lovely to see Aaron - I hope we get to see him again, next time with his man of clay.

Oh Dean Winchester - such a goof. I mean, he is the baddest badass on the planet, but also such a goof. The fact that Jensen can do physical comedy like nobody's business just adds to the charm of Dean knocking that ship over…and over…and over. And Sam reminding him not to touch anything…it was pretty adorable, Dean does tend to touch before thinking - remember the ballet slippers?

When Dean discovers a secret room full of nazi stuff, smart Winchesters put two and two together and realise their old enemies the Thule are behind the toasted humans, and I get to hear Dean quoting Indiana Jones!

In fact I get Dean quoting Indiana Jones, a total Han Solo gun under the table moment and Sam and Harry Potter. IT’S LIKE THIS SHOW KNOWS ME!!!!

Did I mention how much I’m loving this lighter side of the brothers? This teasing, eye-rolling, totally believable sibling interaction that we’re seeing this season. BECAUSE I LOVE IT.

And did I mention how I also love badass brothers? BECAUSE I LOVE THAT TOO! The fight scene with the Nazi’s was simply amazing. Nina Lopez Corrado showed us in Red Meat what a masterful director of action she is and she proved it again here. Even though the boys weren’t on the winning end of things, they sure as hell gave it one good fight.

And then there was Dean and the grenade launcher! Keeping with the lighter tone in the brother’s relationship - we got to see Dean ALMOST getting to use that grenade launcher that’s been languishing in the Impala’s trunk…awwww he just wanted to blow up some nazis! I love that Sam tells his disappointed brother that he’ll get and chance, it’s okay. They really are adorable.

I enjoyed all the secondary characters in this episode. Ellie, Christoph and his crazy nazi dad.

I loved how incredulous Ellie was about the whole situation - even though she saw her date literally go up in flames! I often think that the victims seem way to quick to except the crazy that the boys are telling them. Ellie fought it all the way, and even when she believed in the Hitler stuff, even when as was taking in that she was a descendent of Hitler and that his soul was trapped in a pocket-watch, it was just too much for her when Sam shared that he was born to bring back Lucifer! I thought that was great, and I also thought it was great that Sam tried to share that with her - to make her feel less alone. Sam sharing about his connection to Lucifer and about his psychic powers over two weeks has been pretty damn awesome character stuff. Though I have to say I couldn’t help but giggle through this scene after the overly caffeinated out take we were treated to the day before! They really need to hold off putting those gag clips out until after the episode!

When we finally got to get Hitler - he was so over the top I couldn’t help but laugh. I don’t know much about Hitler’s personality, outside of him being megalomaniacal, tyrannical, murderous, mad man - so I don’t know if he was really into doggies or not - or liked to hug? Or if being in a stopwatch for 71 years sent him batshit crazy - or rather, batshit crazier. I do remember from my modern history learnings, that he was into occult stuff - which could have been interesting if he hadn’t been snuffed out quite so quickly, but let’s face it, we can’t have Hitler and Lucifer running around! I will admit though that at first I was…what even is going on?!! But I ended up laughing because the actor attacked that part with such gusto. He really did. And showing the nazis as bumbling fools whose bad deeds could be crushed by the good in this world - Sam and Dean - somehow felt nourishing.

And then Dean killed Hitler and I’m not sure we’re ever going to hear the end of it!

Dean puts so much stock in who he is by what he does. Helping people, saving people, is a big part of his self esteem, and a big part of how he judges is own self worth. When that is challenged, it takes a big swipe at how Dean sees himself, his place in the scheme of things and how he relates to his life... So killing Hitler? I’m quite happy for him to live off that as long as he wants to - and he gets all the pie for being so awesome! Sure, no one will ever believe him - but Sam does, and that’s pretty much all that matters to Dean.

And then Sam and Dean drove off to find the best pie for a thousand miles - with Dean’s mood definitely improved, because hey…he just killed Hitler!

A happy ending? That’s about as close to a happy ending as we ever get!

The timing of this episode was pretty interesting in the aftermath of Tuesday’s world rocking decision. I’m not sure if they purposely timed this to go after the U.S. election or not - but there were moments that rang extra loud in my ears because of it. I think Dean’s words are something to live by always “There are times when you run, and there are times when you stand and fight”. And having one of the most hated men in history taken out by the beautiful Winchesters felt like a balm to the soul.

I was lucky enough to watch part of this episode being shot - so it put a very different spin on a couple of the scenes for me - I had to go back and watch them again because I was too busy looking across the street to the tree I had been leaning on! Seeing the scenes come together was super cool. I feel so damn blessed to have had the chance to watch them “follow that car” and burn rubber up the street! (My report with loads of pics is here)

So this week we had a little bit of an emotional break - after the heavy and heartbreaking emotional start to the season, it’s good to have a breather and a few laughs, get to smile because our boys are smiling, and celebrate a win with them! A BIG WIN! The brothers were so on point in this episode in every possible way - and I loved it!

Oh and did I mention….Dean killed Hitler?

The Light on Spoilers, Heavy on Squee Preview of Supernatural 12x05 "The One You've Been Waiting For"

-by sweetondean

OH MY GOSH - THIS IS THE ONE I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR! HOW DID THEY KNOW?

I'VE BEEN SO EXCITED TO SEE THIS EPISODE
BECAUSE THIS IS THE EPISODE I SAW THEM FILMING IN VANCOUVER!

AND YES, I'M YELLING BECAUSE I'M EXCITED!

JERRY TOOK A FEW OF US TO LOOK AT A SET!

AND JENSEN GOOFED OFF!

AND JARED SAID HI!

AND JENSEN DID THIS! LOOKING LIKE THIS....

You can read my full report here! If you want to see some more pics and hear all about the day!

Anyway, I'm super excited to see the scenes we watched being filmed, and how they look on screen and in the episode!

Now back to our previously scheduled programming.... THE PREVIEW!

THEN

The boys talked

NOW

NAZI NECROMANCERS@!

Yes ladies and germs! Remember the Nazi Necromancers from Ben Edlund's "Everyone Hates Hitler", with Aaron and his Golem! Well they're back! The Necromancers...and Aaron...I don't think his Golem is though....

Let's look at the synopsis!

“The One You’ve Been Waiting For”

EVERYBODY STILL HATES HITLER – After learning that the soul of Adolf Hitler has been trapped in a 1930’s gold pocket watch, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) must act quickly to prevent a group of Nazi necromancers from resurrecting the Füror. Meredith Glynn penned the episode directed by Nina Lopez-Corrado. (#1205)

Soooo Meredith Glynn is another one of our new writers! She worked on Scream previous to this (with Steve Yockey - who penned next week's episode), and this is her first ep for season 12.

Nina Lopez-Corrado previously directed the wonderful Red Meat! And the boys love her....

\

So Necromancers! I love Everyone Hates Hitler - it's one of my favourite episodes and certainly a favourite of season 8. And I love it when we revisit a storyline - because we know the Necromancers are still out there, and I totally dig that the boys get to face off against them again, so yay! Also, stopping the resurrection of Hitler is a very good thing! But seriously, the Winchester's lives are WEIRD!

Okies let's look at the promo...

GRENADE LAUNCHER!

Jensen has wanted Dean to use that grenade launcher FOREVER! It just sits in the trunk of the Impala taunting him! Bet he still doesn't get to use it though...because look at his little disappointed face at the end...

I do like the look of this episode - if for no other reason than this....

But also this... because look how cool it looks! Our show is so awesome.

Now today - there was another little vid from Shaving People, Punting Things - but this time it's a super cute out-take! Like...SO CUTE! And it was really needed by mostly everyone today...because laughter and love conquers all... and I certainly needed the constant bombardment of noise, muted. So thanks Jensen (and Jared and a bunch of the crew)!

Jensen wrote on his Facebook...

"Let's not forget to be kind and gracious to each other. We are all humans.
And let's certainly not forget how to laugh."

Bless his caffeinated heart.

Oh my gosh they really are like gigantic 5 year olds! I love them so much. So, so much.

Of course...there's no sneak peek yet. So here's this week's waiting gif...

See you back here when the sneak peek drops!

SNEAK PEEK!

Now...if anyone listens to the Women of Letters podcast, you know that these little domestic scenes in the bunker are literally my favourite thing! I just love that we have a space now for the boys to have these kind of moments, that we see them doing ordinary things, like cooking or shopping or eating. And these moments often lead to conversations! And the brothers talking is literally my favourite thing. Okay I know I said that twice, but let's face it, every thing on Supernatural is literally my favourite thing.

Also.... Sammy bought Dean pie!

And I love Sam's face when Dean says he's not hungry....like whaaaat? I love how well these two know each other.

Now there is a little more to this scene - this was from the Kelly Live show (or whatever it's called) that Jared was on...and is recorded off the TV, so that's why the quality is ropey...

Dean peeking and the pie tho....

IT'S SUPERNATURAL DAY!

Enjoy the ep, everyone!

Leylin Vixen's Quick Draw Recap - Supernatural 12x04 American Nightmare

American Nightmare

Opening words

Episode three left us emotionally compromised and Mary in the wind so I was eagerly waiting for episode four. Needless to say I was not disappointed. This was the first script from a new writer Davy Perez. He was live tweeting the episode and he seemed genuinely excited for his first outing. Also he has black humour that also made me laugh during the episode. We will have exciting times ahead if everything the fans are speculating will come to pass. So we shall see.

Details

Title           American Nightmare
Episode          12.04
First aired        November 3, 2016
Directed by John F. Showalter
Written by Davy Perez
Monster         Gail Peterson
Timeline
Location(s) Mason City, Iowa
                      Pleasant Valley, Missouri

Story

This week we had creepy MotW case on our hands and still the episode remembered the myth arcs of the season. We got an update from Castiel to Dean about his and Crowley’s hunt for Lucifer and Dean and Sam were both showing signs of the emotional fallout of the last episode.

The case starts when a woman suffering from stigmata comes to a church and dies from her injuries and the Winchesters pick the case up.

Dean is mostly grumpy to everyone and especially the child services person because of what happened with Mary, especially when she mentions splitting up families to them. Sam and Dean head to see a religious family whose daughter has died and Sam feels that something fishy is going on. Dean suspects that the killer is the Wiccan working in the child services, and Sam thinks it is the ghost of the daughter. They split up and Sam finds out that the daughter hasn’t died and she is being held captive and religiously and mentally tortured in the basement.

Sam is captured and he is able to talk to Magda. He learns that not only the daughter is a psychic but she killed those people by accident when she was trying to get them to notice and help her. The mother tries to kill her whole family at the family dinner but Magda prevents it. Dean slowly comes to terms with Mary’s leaving.

We also see that Mr. Ketch is following the brothers. The ending of the episode casts a grim note to the whole story when he kills Magda because the Winchesters let her live. We still do not see his full face.

Characters

Episode four had a great cast like many times before. Gail Peterson as the mother was chilling but Magda in my opinion stole the whole show. Abraham and Elijah Peterson were being ruled and were brainwashed by the mother. They were innocents that were killed by a very human monster. Beth Roberts and Olivia Sanchez gave a very human face to child services. Mr. Ketch still intrigues me but I hope he is more than a mere thug. The cross tattoo on his hand is interesting. Does it have a back story? I also think I want to snatch his bike for myself!

Set design

We start with a church set. I think this is the real church they have used a few time but I am not sure. I liked the glass windows the most. It reminded me of the season seven premiere 7.01 Meet the New Boss where Castiel changed his image in the window to himself as their new god. That imagery gives the immediate feeling of a church even though nothing else would be seen.

The episode also had a normal morgue set and a child services office set. With these sets we only got to see a small amount. Most of the episode we lingered in the Peterson household. They had almost fully cut themselves off from the society and the whole farm was close to old western times. Indeed very “Children of the Corn” like! It had very earthly colours and and zero bright colours. The basement on the other hand was something from the dark ages or The Exorcist. The brutality that was happening down there was mirrored by the set, the “pagan” iron cross just added to the effect. It was a nice parallel that Mr. Ketch had a  tattoo cross on his hand.

Costume design

Normally the costumes are pretty same episode to episode but even the Winchesters got something fairly new and blast from the past this time around. Sam and Dean were trauma counsellors in 11.08 Just My Imagination which was a pretty similar look to Child Protective Services case workers. Priests they have been both in 1.14 Nightmare and in 4.03 In the Beginning, when Samuel and Dean were in disguise. Of course they also appeared as FBI too, so three aliases in one episode. I think that is the first one ever.

Costumes for the family were also different than normal. Like I wrote in set design all the bright colours were missing and some of it was even fit for the dark ages or crazy horror movies! The costumes were close to earthy and pretty plain.

Music

The songs for this episode were Golden Dunes by The Budos Band, Down in My Heart by Paloma Kwiatkowski and Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho by Paloma Kwiatkowski. I chose a part from the lyrics from Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho as we have two familiar names on it. You’ll never know if the song was chosen just because of that. There were also slightly different lyrics from various singers to this song so not all had the said names.

"Good morning sister Mary
Good morning brother John
Well I want to stop and talk with you
want to tell you how I come along

I know you've heard about Joshua
He was the son of Nun
He never stopped his work until
Until the work was done”

 – Elvis Presley

Here is the short +/- rundown for American Nightmare:

+ Welcome back horror/creepy SPN
+ Winchesters in priest outfits
+ Winchesters in cardigans
+ Different aliases than the FBI for the boys
+ Mary, Castiel and Crowley were “present”
+ Davy Perez
+ Psychic!Sam/canon
+ Psychics
+ That motorbike
+ Top of the notch guest stars

- Pretty disturbing images
- BMoL (Yeah, image of them have not improved)

-/+ Mr. Ketch

Paloma Kwiatkowski as Magda Peterson

Now I wonder what 12.05 “The One You’ve Been Waiting For” will have in store for us?

Review - Supernatural American Nightmare 12x04

American Nightmare was new writer Davy Perez’s debut episode….good job Davy! Seriously good job! We got character and show history, well written brothers - bickering - teasing - talking - feeling their feels, did I mention talking? It was a good creepy story with lots of creepy stuff...and sad stuff, and of course, in the theme of this season’s opening episodes, it was all about family, mothers, second chances….and human monsters.

After a pretty awesome, and pretty gross teaser - we’re treated to the boys as priests - for the first time in a really long time - and we get our first glimpse of any fallout of Mary’s leaving.

I’ve been itching to see what the aftermath of Mary deciding to leave her boys was going to be for the brothers - how they were both going to handle it, how that hurt was going to manifest.

Straight from the get go, we see Dean is cranky, short tempered - or rather, short on tolerance! He snaps at the priest, at the mortician, at Sam when he tries to reach out to Dean, he’s hurting and he's trying to ignore it, and he's cutting himself off emotionally - except he isn’t...I mean, not really, not like we’ve seen Dean do in the past. Once upon a time Dean would have completely shut down, and reaching him would have taken multiple episodes, and Sam and us would have been all frustrated...but that’s the old Dean....Dean has grown and grown up, and we see that transformation reflected in American Nightmare.

He’s struggling with Mary's choice, it's obvious....he looks wistfully at the mother and the son at the church, and takes an instant dislike to Beth, not just because she’s Wiccan, and Dean thinks witches are skeevy, but also because her job, as a child protection agency officer, sometimes requires her to separate families, and right now any notion that a family should be separated, that children should be taken from their mother or visa versa, whether right or wrong, grates right on Dean’s wounded nerves! He thinks he's lost his mum, for the second time, and all he wants is his family to be together. That’s all he’s ever wanted, or at least something he's always dreamed of - and he thought, for one brief shining moment, they he and Sam had caught a break, something nice had happened and all that the two of them had grieved for over the years, was now theirs....and then....it wasn’t.

Dean wears his heart on his sleeve, it’s something I’ve always adored about him. For all his bluff and bluster, he has a great capacity for love and he's not afraid to show it. He’s not afraid to let everyone and their dog know just how much he loves Sam! He wasn’t afraid to show his love for Charlie, or his love for Cas. But wearing his heart on his sleeve also means we see his pain, even when he thinks we can't,. he's not always able to hide it as successfully as he thinks he can, he can’t always mask it, more often than not it shows on his face, in his attitude, in his tone. He may try and bottle it all up, but exactly how he’s feeling pretty much oozes out of every single one of Dean’s pores.

We’ve seen a lot of change in the brother’s relationship in the past season - a lot of honesty. Those feelings that were once buried deep down, those fears that were ignored or shrugged off or denied, were talked about, and even if they weren’t, they were acknowledged. That was a great big step forward for the brothers and especially for Dean, and it was one of the things I loved the most about Season 11, the openness between the brothers.

For a minute I was worried we were going to get that closed off Dean again, worried he would go backwards - but instead we saw Dean reaching out to his mum with an adorable text - a very brave thing to do, because that’s really putting his feelings out there and opening the door to more rejection.…imagine if Mary hadn't responded. Oh my God the heartbreak! And though he was crabby and sarcastic with Sam - the tiny bladder line made me nearly pee my pants…when push came to shove, he did talk to Sam and told Sam exactly what he feared most - that their mum would not come back. She left…and maybe she wouldn’t come back.

The brothers talked. Dean opened up (even if he was cranky about it) and said out loud exactly what he was scared of. I think I clutched my heart with pride and joy!

And after Sam said to Dean that sometimes time apart is what people needed, Dean obviously thought about it - because by the end, he says to Magda, “Sometimes in order to figure things out, a person needs space”. He then tells Sam he was right - he's pretty good at that - Sam was not just right about the case, he was right about the boys needing to give Mary time and space - he gets it, but it still hurts and he's honest enough to say that, but that he'll try and deal with it better than he was. I loved that moment between the brothers - talking over the roof of the car, where so many of their emotional moments take place. I’m so happy the guys have got to a place where they can be open with like this.

Outwardly, it seems Sam is doing a lot better than Dean with Mary's choice - but his need to make Dean talk, is most likely also his need to talk. I think he reaches out because he needs to talk about how he's feeling, as much as he's trying to open the door for Dean. I also think his very angry reaction to the mother, is not just about the family refusing their daughter care, but that this mother did…a mother, a mother caused her child’s death (or not actually as the case may be!). Magda’s mother was not there for her when she needed her love and understanding and care.…Sam’s going through a complex time with his mother, the mother he never thought he'd know just left him.... her choice. As empathetic as Sam is towards Mary’s needs - he’s hurting and confused too.

I love that we revisited Sam’s psychic powers and I wondered if they were why the British Men of Letters were particularly hostile towards Sam? Do they know about the demon blood thing and all that comes with it? If they’ve been watching the brothers for as long as they have, maybe they do! And what else do they know? Neither brother is untouched by the supernatural....they've both been monsters - demons, vampires - themselves at one point or another!

American Nightmare also gave us beautiful, compassionate Sam. I loved how he reached out to Magda and tried to help her understand that her powers do not make her evil - that she just has to learn to control them. I loved that he shared his story about his own psychic powers and that his powers, in the past or not, make him who he is. It was actually lovely to hear Sam say that about himself, not that he’s “not clean”, but that his powers are a part of what makes him Sam. That warmed my heart.

It’s Sam’s words that stop Magda going the same way as Max Miller - stopped her killing her family, and maybe herself, and it was Sam’s words that comforted her at the end, and that made her feel less alone. When she lay her head on his shoulder - I wibbled a little.

The brothers let Magda go - because these days, they see the greys with monsters, not just the black and white - they understand that not all monsters, or the supernaturally afflicted, are bad. Unlike the British Men of Letters - who see no grey and ultimately, their assassin Mr Ketch, kills Magda…which was horrible, so horrible, and also made me much more worried for Sam and Dean…and for every supernatural creature the brothers have any kind of relationship with. The British Men of Letters have zero tolerance - and essentially, this makes them monsters in human form.

I really loved this episode - I really loved the way the brothers were with each other, the bitching, the teasing, the arguing and ultimately, the opening up. I loved their little fight over who was right! I loved the cardigans, and the fact that they must have changed in the car by the side of the road!

I loved that the monster of the week was human, that always raises the stakes, because killing a human is very different to killing a vampire, or a demon - and in a season where the first monsters we met were the British Men of Letters, I thought it was particularly relevant that the brothers are having to deal with non supernatural bad guys here…and it was made even trickier and more confronting for them because it was a family, and a mother - with all that Sam and Dean are going through with their own family and their own mother.

I will never tire of seeing Dean rushing to Sam, burning rubber in the Impala, and I will never tire of Sam being smart enough not to need Dean’s rushing! I will never tire of girls fancying Dean, because really…LOOK AT HIM! He should be getting ALL the numbers! I loved that we didn’t see Beth sharing her number - as cute as that would have been, but that we did see the brothers joking about how Dean was going to kill her a minute ago and now he might date her! Such brothers! Such boys! Their life is so weird!

But what I loved most of all, and my absolutely favourite part of the episode, was Mary’s text. Like I said, Dean really put himself out there emotionally…checking in, risking rejection, asking if he should still call her mum...that’s pretty damn ballsy stuff....it's scary to be so vulnerable. So to see his face when Mary finally texted back. His face! I will carry that little look on his face in my heart forever. I felt his relief, I felt his heart swell when he realised it was all going to be okay, I felt that jolt of happiness whiz through him. Yep, I cried. I cried for Dean two weeks in a row….but this time, I was smiling. Dean’s such a badass, and sometimes he’s also so totally not.

American Nightmare was an auspicious start from a "rookie" Supernatural writer - and with how the brother’s were written here, I can’t wait to see Davy Perez’s next episode!

Next week’s ep, is the one I saw them shooting in Vancouver!!!! I’m so excited to see the scenes!

Thanks for reading and thanks being patient with my tardiness…work really got in the way of life and sleep, and yes even Supernatural! I'll try to not let it happen again!

See you soon!
