Leylin Vixen's Quick Draw SPN Roundup - The Future

The Future

Opening words

This season is just speeding up isn't it? Everything is finally coming to place and we can almost see where everything is heading although we might curse the show while we get there. Castiel is gone and for me it seems like he is being controlled same with Kelly. I am not even sure she is still alive and not being an empty vessel after this episode.

So, let’s check it out!

Story

We start with oh so lovely imaginary with Kelly and Dagon. Dagon is taunting her and telling how much evil the baby will do after she dies. Then as a desperate act Kelly decides to slit her own wrists so that she will die and the baby will not be born. But nothing is that easy in this show. The blood is flowing out while she drops to unconsciousness. The trick is that the baby doesn't let her to die and it heals her. Dagon finds her that way.

After that gruesome act comes one of my favourite scenes in this episode. Smart!Sam in on research mode and going over the books. He hasn't found out anything big yet but he did count that the Nephilim will not need nine months to be born. It will be born surprise, surprise on the season finale day May 18th. Of course while Sam and Dean are having the tactics meeting Cas walks in and says hello! You have been missing a month Cas. I think that is not enough and Dean lets him have it.

Castiel comes clean, sort of and he tells that he has been working with the angels and he got their messages but he didn't answer. The angels were as clueless as always. Dean shows his worry by being angry. I can relate to that feeling. He needs a breather and when he has calmed down he tells Castiel they were worried. Cas still feels like a failure. Unfortunately we will not get TFW as Cas has a mission to only retrieve The Colt and he steals it under Dean's nose. Although it was cute that Dean kept it under his pillow. Sam gets an idea to extract the baby's grace but Cas is already gone and that he took The Colt.

Sooooo, angels being clueless was a lie. They are planning an attack against Dagon and Kelly at the house they are staying after a stakeout and the two bullets left are meant for them. Fight breaks out, everything goes wrong and Castiel kidnaps Kelly and doesn't kill her. He was trying to spare Sam and Dean that they wouldn't need to kill Kelly when the time comes and then he couldn't do it himself. The plan is to take Kelly through the heaven's portal which will make her death swift and painless. That also includes her baby. Dagon also gets an earful from Lucifer that is not happy at all about her caretaking.

Nothing seems to go according to plan when Castiel's truck breaks down and the duo head to a motel. Kelly gets Castiel to feel the baby kick and then she claims she sees the future. She decides to go with Cas. After this scene the Winchesters catches up to them and they knock on the motel door. Dean gives Cas some hard loving because he stole The Colt. They found him because Sam put a tracker to his phone. Boys having small trust issues maybe? Dean takes The Colt back and Sam tells his plan to Kelly. He is worried about her but she is not thrilled about his plan.

All of the four decide to go to the bunker to discuss their options. So Kelly and Castiel get in the Impala and she suddenly decides to steal the car. She wants to go with Castiel to heaven because she got a vision that Castiel will take care of her child after she is gone. Cas does not have her faith but he does not stop her and they arrive at the playground.

Dagon is already there hiding and when the duo is about to step in with Joshua she kills him. Bye, bye Joshua. You were nice while we knew you. Dagon beats Castiel up until Sam and Dean show up to distract her. Kelly's vision comes through as Castiel steps in to protect her. Sam is hit on the ground and Dean too and she DESTROYS THE COLT! Sorry, about that outburst. I also yelled when I saw the scene in the episode. Cough, now where was I. The Baby gives it's mojo to Castiel and he burns Dagon alive. Cas heals Dean and he tells them that now he has faith and it is nooooot suspicious at all. Damnit Cas!

The Winchesters are suspicious and they try to stop Cas and Kelly from going but Castiel zaps both of them unconscious. Castiel tells Kelly that he saw the future too which is not at all ominous... And we are left Team Free Will separated and me worrying myself to death what the hell is even going on.

Characters

Castiel did the most work in this episode and we saw firsthand what happens to an angel that has no purpose, no orders and no faith. Angels seem to be totally lost when they are given free will. At least Cas seems to have no idea what he should do with it and he has hard time to do the decisions alone. This makes him also vulnerable to bad influence and depression. I felt like he was trying to decide that protecting all the Winchesters was his mission but Dean shot it down by saying that they don't need a babysitter. Castiel does not know that being a part of their family means a lot more and they all take care of one another but not like that.

Speaking of angels it was nice knowing you Joshua, Kelvin and Hozai. You were out of your league with Dagon and you paid the price for it. I liked Kelvin but all the angels were weak in this episode. I guess it follows the same rules as Castiel was in trouble also with Alastair and Azazel so they had no chance against Dagon. I just wish they would not have killed Joshua and Kelvin this fast. But I guess they needed to go because we can't have good angels on the show that are more than a red shirt. Demons have the same issue nowadays. Lucifer on the other hand is alive and well and creepy as always. Dagon never felt as big of a threat as Ramiel and now she is ashes.

Kelly's actress could really spread her wings with difficult and demanding scenes and emotional scale from deep despair to hope and happiness. I can't really relate to her situation because I have not been carrying a child nor given birth to any but still her character does not feel real to me. What has been bothering me how sometimes her actions make no sense and that feeling still lingers from her.

Here is the full list of characters:

Mark Pellegrino - Lucifer
Misha Collins - Castiel
Courtney Ford - Kelly Kline
Ali Ahn - Dagon
Nathan Mitchell - Kelvin
Damian Mavis - Hozai
Paul Barton - Joshua

Set design

There is not much to say about sets this time around. We had scenes in the bunker where we got the usual layout. We did also get a glimpse of Castiel's room which seems to be Mary's old one. But it was very similar to Dean's and Sam's room but even cleaner so there is not much to write about. Also I am not sure if Kelly and Dagon were staying in the same house as before but the basement and upstairs did not look out of the ordinary from an old farm house. Also we see the familiar Lucifer's prison room. We do get one new motel room set that is very grey and plain in colouring. At least Castiel learnt his lesson to not let Kelly go to the bathroom.

Props

I will only write about one prop this week because losing it hit me pretty had. I just can't believe it was destroyed. You guessed it. RIP The Colt. Here is the introduction that the fire arm got when it was literally introduced on the show by none other than John Winchester. I mean the starting lore even to the gun is epic. On the barrel there is an inscription in Latin, "Non timebo mala" - "I will fear no evil." that fits to the theme of the Winchesters for all 12 seasons.

"Back in 1835, when Halley's Comet was overhead, same night those men died at the Alamo, they say Samuel Colt made a gun. A special gun. He made it for a hunter. A man like us, only on horseback. Story goes, he made thirteen bullets. This hunter used the gun a half dozen times before he disappeared, the gun along with him... Somehow Daniel got his hands on it. They say... they say this gun can kill anything." – 1.20 Dead Man's Blood

"Invented by Samuel Colt, a gun named after its inventor “Colt”, and after its revolving cylinder. Before the Colt revolver, only one and two-barrel flintlock pistols had been invented for hand held use. Colt revolvers were all based on cap-and-ball technology until the Smith and Wesson license on the bored-through cylinder (bought from Rollin White) expired around 1869."
