Leylin Vixen's Quick Draw SPN Roundup - All Along the Watchtower

All Along the Watchtower

OMG! It is finale time. I am excited and terrified as I should. You never know what will happen and if our heart will be ripped out and stomped on in Supernatural and it was, but at the same time it was stabbed, shot and blown to bits. I have no words. When I watched it I was speechless and bawling my eyes out. Don't get me wrong. I am truly excited about the AU world and what it can bring to us. BUT we did lose one character for good. After the finale Mark Sheppard said Crowley is gone for good and he is not coming back to the show. I am so sad that he is gone. But many episodes in this season felt that Crowley's story got closure and his "Bye boys" will be forever remembered. Also Castiel and Rowena bite the dust and Mary ended up in the AU world. So, was I fine after the finale? Hardly, ice cream and whiskey sounds about it for me.

So, here is the last Roundup for season 12!

Story

We start the finale little more peacefully than the episode before. Kelly is fighting with IKEA furniture in a place that is their hideout that Castiel got for them. The cottage is in a beautiful spot. Kelly is on edge but Castiel says he will help her. Cas also will buy many diapers and has read many books because of it so he is pretty serious about it.

At the bunker the boys and Mary are talking about what to do with Lucifer and Cas. We get a flashback of Crowley getting axed and the rat. He is now getting to his body inside the rat and he is "resurrected" again.  It is almost similar when Dean dug out of the grave in the first episode of season 4 called Lazarus Rising. The scene turns to the bunker and where the trio tries to call to Rowena to get her again do the spell to get rid of Lucifer. Except that Luci is ahead of them and he has brutally killed her... It will get worse from here.

The new plan is to get Cas and Kelly, and keep moving. They look for the strange signs as a Nephilim being born is a big deal. It creates all kinds of weird stuff. And as Cas and Kelly return from a shop run one huge thing has already happened. In the back yard a shiny portal has appeared and as Cas is curious he touches it and is teleported to nightmare land. How cool was that place? It is dark and gloomy and it has weird monsters. Cas is saved by someone familiar. Meanwhile Kelly records a video for Jack.

Back to the bunker Crowley appears and Dean gives him a good hit to the jaw. None of them are too happy to see him after what he did. Dean pulls out a knife and is clearly considering ending Crowley once and for all. He stops because now they need Crowley to do the spell. The boys tell them it is because Rowena is dead. Crowley wants to fix his mistake because he wanting to win over Lucifer caused this. He is bored of hell and the dullness and constant backstabbing. Crowley promises to help and then seal the gates of hell once and for all.

Kelly tries to find Cas and meanwhile Sam and Dean fins out that there is a massive power outage in Washington. They find out a familiar owner to one of the cottages. Dean stabs Crowley’s hand that it was stuck to the table and then they head out to get their friend. Cas is telling about his dream to Kelly. The Winchesters arrive and Mary stays beside Kelly's bed as she has started to get contractions. Cas heals Dean.

They all take a peak to the other side because they need to know is it a danger to their world. Cas explains it is a world where they were never born and he gets a little help from BOBBY! But it is not their Bobby. I don't care. I am glad Jim Beaver is back. This world is very different from the normal world. John died 40 years before which this Bobby heard from Mary. This world was not saved so it’s currently locked in an eternal war between heaven and hell. People are almost extinct and the monster from before, those are the demons they have here. Meanwhile Kelly and Mary talk.

Crowley appears and Cas reassures Kelly before the gang heads out to face Lucifer. Luci is ready to start the apocalypse II with his son and Team Free Will is on his way. Cas tries to battle him but Luci tosses him aside like a rag doll. The guys pretend to run away and they step in the portal. Luci is curious and arrogant so he follows them. Dean takes Luci head on with the angel killing bullets while Crowley and Sam prepare the spell. Luci is not amused and he starts to beat the living crap out of Dean.

Dean is losing until Crowley comes and tosses Lucifer away. Before this Crowley has said the spell needs a life. Sam snatches Dean to safety and Crowley buts heads with Lucifer. That is until he decides to sacrifice himself and we hear his last words "Bye boys" before he stabs himself to his chest. And here comes the tears. Crowley falls down dead and Cas walks past the boys and stabs Luci. Sam and Dean get out and Dean yells for Cas. Castiel appears back and all seems well until Luci stabs the angel blade through Cas. The boys and I are stunned as Cas falls down dead. And yeah, rest of the episode was little bit a blur.

Lucifer is ready to kill the boys but Mary appears after Kelly gives birth and she has those warded brass knuckles with her. She says to the boys she loves them (NOOOOOOOOOO!) and dukes it out with Lucifer hitting him with all she got. Mary is able to get him back through the tear but he pulls her with him. They are now both stuck there. (Why show, WHY?) Lucifer is beyond pissed.

Dean is numb and in shock so he falls to his knees. He looks at the body of his dead friend and then the sky. This is how you break Dean Winchester. Kill almost everything he holds dear. Sam sees the light in the cabin and focuses then to their mission more than the pain of their losses. He heads to check Kelly and Jack that has yellow eyes. THE END...

I hate Hellatus...

Characters

As per usual the boys were great in this episode but we also got a lot of insight on Castiel and Kelly. It is adorable how nurturing Castiel was for Kelly and her unborn child. When he was buying those diapers and read over 70 books about child care, talking about an angel going to extremes so that they both would be fine. I felt for Kelly on this one. Now she was just a mother who knew that she would be dead and never could see her son. Castiel tried to keep everyone safe. He healed Dean and attacked Lucifer head on that the Winchester could escape. The look on his face when he appeared through the portal, for a short moment he was proud and happy that he did save them all before he died. Kelly did not survive the birth and death always leaves a mark. I am certain Castiel will be back but in what state. We shall see.

Alright, deep breaths, the Winchesters were a united front throughout the episode. Mary again stepped in front of her boys to protect them and hit the devil with all that she got. The boys saw their friend just get killed so they were in shock. I am not sure they even knew what was happening. I loved her the whole season and in this last moment too. The effect of them seeing Crowley die was also weighing on them. Mark Sheppard was perfect. He shined in his last outing as Crowley. “Bye boys” was a great signature for his era as Crowley. He left in his own terms. He was not killed by Lucifer or the Winchesters.

Aaand what about Lucifer? Mark Pellegrino can play him so well. I truly hate Lucifer and how he offed Rowena (NOT cool!) But it is in a love to hate way. Luci really got some crosses now on his killing chart. The boys were in shock for a very good reason as the threat was present everywhere around him. Everything he says would make me want to run to the hills, literally.

Now be ready for screaming… BOBBY SINGER! How cool was it that he was back even though it is the AU Bobby. I have missed his presence that was also felt the whole time he was on our screen. It was the same for Sam and Dean. It was Bobby and not Bobby at the same time. They hoped so much that he would have been their Bobby. Also a long time before the episode aired Jim Beaver tweeted a few times how he was sad he was not going to be in season 12 at all. The first time in the shows history and all the fans FELL for it!

Here is the full list of characters:

Jared Padalecki - Sam Winchester
Jensen Ackles - Dean Winchester
Mark Sheppard - Crowley
Mark Pellegrino - Lucifer
Misha Collins - Castiel

Samantha Smith - Mary Winchester

Set design

As a set we of course have the familiar bunker but also much, much more. We have two special indoor sets and two gorgeous outdoor sets this time in their own way. So shall we take a look of the indoor sets first as the outdoor filming locations are a real treat this time. First we are focusing on the cabin where Cas and Kelly are hiding out. It looks like normal simple house. Mostly we do see Jack’s colourful baby room and Kelly’s bedroom. The house has darker lighting and low key brown decor and colour. It is very close to nature. We also see a glimpse of its corridors and the aisle before the front door. And nice little BTS info is that the cabin was made just for this episode in eight days. Next we have a small peek of Rowena’s hotel room and I will try to focus on something else than her gruesome death and blood in it. The room had luxurious decor and yellow and golden colouring. It was pretty similar as the angel waiting room on earth. Classical furniture gave the last costly touch to the room.

Now, the outdoor sets were amazing. The mountain area where the cottage is was beautiful. If I would imagine Garden of Eden this place would come pretty close to it. The actors and the staff were also in awe while filming. So of course we got a lot of eye candy shots of the surroundings. I wonder how much a real cabin for that area will cost. A girl can dream right?

Last but not least is the AU world set. This was so cool! I liked the grimness and the colours but I liked the scenery in Purgatory too. For this we also got BTS info about the pointy pillars we saw in the scenery. They are actually designed like the angel blades, just a bigger blade. This one little detail lifted my excitement that we might see this world more. Probably not that detailed but hopefully we will see Bobby helping Mary on that other world. She needs to run and far from Luci. He is pretty pissed. Also the new demons looked nasty. The AU world seems very sandy and dry. Also the red horizon was pretty cool.

Minutiae

For the finale I have something special again. We did not have a lot of different costume design or props than usual so I decided to go with minutiae with this article. These are quotes from Supernatural Wiki that mark a milestone for said characters and actors. It is joyous and sad at the same time.

"All Along the Watchtower" is Misha Collins' 100th appearance on Supernatural, including his voice over work from 11.04 Baby. The episode also marks Mark Sheppard's 70th appearance as Crowley.

"All Along the Watchtower" reveals that archangels cannot be killed by standard angel blades.

Castiel's death fell on a Thursday, appropriate as he is the angel of Thursday.

Music

"Carry On Wayward Son" by Kansas and "Scotland the Brave"

"Carry on my wayward son
For there'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more

Once I rose above the noise and confusion
Just to get a glimpse beyond the illusion
I was soaring ever higher, but I flew too high
Though my eyes could see I still was a blind man
Though my mind could think I still was a mad man
I hear the voices when I'm dreamin', I can hear them say

Carry on my wayward son
For there'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more

Masquerading as a man with a reason
My charade is the event of the season
And if I claim to be a wise man, it surely means that I don't know
On a stormy sea of moving emotion
Tossed about I'm like a ship on the ocean
I set a course for winds of fortune, but I hear the voices say

Carry on my wayward son
For there'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more

Carry on, you will always remember
Carry on, nothing equals the splendour
Now your life's no longer empty
Surely heaven waits for you

Carry on my wayward son
For there'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more"
