Review: Supernatural 12x13 "Family Feud" - by sweetondean

Lord, I still feel like I’m still catching up from Vegascon! And guess who got con crud…late…so I think it’s plane crud, or possibly allergic to work crud – whatever it is, I’m blaming it for my (yet again) tardiness!

Family Feud was another jam packed episode with so much going on, jumping across four storylines – Gavin, Lucifer, Kelly and Mary and all those involved! The last couple of episodes have really pushed the story forward! The back half of the season really is cracking along at one hell of a pace.

I always wondered if they’d ever revisit Crowley’s kid, Gavin. He of the possible butterfly effect. I mean, what was he out there doing that was causing possible havoc with the timeline? We will never know – but that hole in the matrix of time has been plugged and Gavin has gone back to where he belonged and his destined untimely death…. And you’ve got to wonder…. In a season with a risen mum, struggling against being thrown into the present, struggling to fit a world she was never meant for… well, you all watch the show…

Supernatural Think Tank - Anna's Thinking Thoughts on 12x13 Family Feud

Playing With Fire🔥

Crowley with Lucifer
Rowena with Crowley
Mary with BMOL
Kelly  with Dagon

True Intentions?

Mr. Ketch: Your sons – I’m sure they’re fine lads and all but it might be best if you were to disengage from them a bit. This work – it’s demanding and it must come first. The Men of Letters is my family.
Mary: I’m sorry. Nothing comes before my family, not with me.
Mr. Ketch: Really? Or is that just what you want to believe? You’re different when you talk to them. Softer. Weaker. Not an insult, just an observation. But when you hunt Mary, you’re one of the best I’ve ever seen. Now you might play at being the good mummy but when you’re in the thick of it, nothing but a blade in your hand and blood in the air, that’s the real you, the best you. And I think you know it – and I think that scares the hell out of you.

I don't think Ketch was wrong about Mary at all.  I actually believed he was spot on.  I don't think Mary went to her boys to prove Ketch wrong.....I think she went to Sam and Dean because she knew Ketch was right about her.

Leylin Vixen's Quick Draw Recap - Stuck in the Middle (With You)

Opening words

Well, holy crap. I have no idea how I will recap this story. It was amazing and awesome and I immediately knew that recapping this will be hell. I love when the show takes risks and shows us new ways to tell the story. I also must say that I love Tarantino movies and the new canon they introduced in this episode got my interest peaked. I really don't dare to present the story in step by step order so I think it is chronological recap just for my sanity.

Wish me luck!

Review - Supernatural 12x12 Stuck in the Middle (With You) - by sweetondean

Don’t you just love our show? I mean seriously, don’t you love it? Twelve seasons in and Supernatural still likes to experiment with form and story, and still has the capacity to surprise us with twists and turns we never saw coming and simply never expected to see coming! It still leaves us discussing the whys and the hows and the wheres. I always say Supernatural doesn’t rest on its laurels - its laurels being it’s length of time on air and its passionate fandom - and Stuck in the Middle (With You), is a fine example of our show still stretching its epic wings all these years down the track.

I loved this episode! Loved. From the timeline that jumped back and forth, to the music choices, to the absolutely amazing reveals, to the questions that these raised, and the conflicted character feelings I was left with. It was a fabulously penned episode from Davy Perez - witty and smart - with amazing direction by our favourite of all arch angels, the one and only Richard Speight, Jr.. Rich kept the pace pumping and us on the edge of our seats, delivering several tight and exciting fight scenes, and some super cool moments followed by cracker surprises in what must have been a complex script to bring to the screen. Plus Serge’s beautiful cinematography and what must have been a truly brain scrambling edit by editor John Fitzpatrick, all made for a brave and innovative episode that came together beautifully. Like I said, I loved it!

I was lucky enough to once again be able to watch this episode with my friend Hazel. We were still travelling post Vegascon and where holed up in a hotel room. What made this experience even more of a treat was Stuck in the Middle (With You) was one of those episodes that makes you want to talk about it! We found ourselves discussing demon lore, character choices, looking up the Superwiki to confirm when we last saw the Colt, sharing feels about Mary, about our boys, gasping and clapping our hands as each reveal played out. You should have heard us when Ramiel flashed those yellow eyes! It was so much fun!

Stuck in the Middle (With You) was a little bit of an homage to some of Tarantino's classic film moments. From the music styling that included spaghetti western themes and the fabulous use of “Walk With a Winner” as we cut to Mary helping Cas into the barn, while the boys battled the demons and poor old Wally dies. Man I LOVED that music cue, it was absolutely fantastic and it worked a treat with the sudden burst of chaos it accompanied.

Supernatural Think Tank - Anna's Thinky Thoughts on 12x12 Stuck In The Middle (With You)

My brother made me watch all of Quentin Tarantino's movies.  I had never really heard of him or seen anything he's ever done.  The first one I think I watched was From Dusk Til Dawn.  That movie was sick and I kinda liked it.  I was introduced to True Romance, Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill. I've yet to see the Hateful Eight.  Tarantino certainly has a certain style of film making that's for sure and he's not short on his use of killing either.  For me, watching a Tarantino movie is never dull and I quite enjoyed this episode's homage to a couple of Tarantino's finest, the most prominent being Reservoir Dogs.

I loved the whole time jumping, going back and forth, seeing the events of what happened through different perspectives. I got a kick out of the slo mo walk and the planning at the diner scene.  I giggled at the prospect of trying to figure out which one of them at the table was supposed to be Mr. Pink. 😁 The entire episode felt like I was watching a movie and it had my attention from beginning to end.  Intense would be the word I 'd use to describe this ep, intense and illuminating.

I love when show explores it's history and answers questions that we wondered about, but never got an answer to, and all the while in doing so introduces new canon.  What a talented group that write for this show. Kudos Davey Perez for such an awesome, if at times infuriating, (Mary W) script.

sweetondean's Light on Spoilers, Heavy on Squee Preview of Supernatural 12x12 - Stuck in the Middle with You

It's time for another new episode of Supernatural, and this one is directed by our favourite Trickster/Archangel/Con Maestro - Mr Richard Speight, Jnr.!!!

This is Rich's second episode, after directing last season's wonderful Just My Imagination - he is slated for one more this season.

Okay.... now where were we.

THEN

Ermmmm.... anyhoo....

NOW
After an episode pretty much all about the brothers, we're back with Cas and Mary...and Wally! The hunter we met in the diner with Mick in the First Blood episode!

Okie dokie... let's look at the synopsis!

SUPERNATURAL 12.12 “Stuck in the Middle (With You)”

Mary (guest star Samantha Smith) asks Sam (Jared Padalecki), Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Castiel (Misha Collins) for help on a case she’s working but neglects to mention the British Men of Letters are involved. When Mary is double crossed, everything is revealed. Richard Speight Jr directed the episode written by Davy Perez.

This is Davy Perez's second episode -the first being American Nightmare. I'm so excited to see another episode directed by Rich! Yay!

Okay - let's look at the promo!

Whoa. This looks like a heavy episode! A double cross, Cas looking seriously unwell, and the Winchesters in the firing line - again. Look stressful!

Here's the sneak peek.

Oh my gosh I love this scene - and I love the camera work, all swirling around as everyone talks over each other. And I swear Jensen takes over with the snoring when Sam is talking about his files - how many times have we seen Jensen do this to Jared at a panel! Then Mary uses her mum voice!

Now Shaving People, Punting Things put out another awesome trailer...

A-hem. One more thing....

If there's another Producer's Preview I will try to add it to this preview - but I AM GOING TO HARRY POTTER WORLD TOMORROW so I may not have time!

So enjoy the episode everyone!
